ACCEPT your depression before you start dealing with it

So you thought acting and modelling is about expensive shoes and bags. Well! There`s much beyond that glamour which you see. Models are believed to have it all! Sprawling lawns, studio apartments, brand new Porsche, Jimmy Choo shoes but all of these fail to shield those lovely looking, permanent smiling faces of models and celebrities from the internal battle they are going through.

You lost your modelling contract, your co-actor cheated on you, fake modelling agency duped due of lakhs and you are totally broken, in immense guilt and pain. It is absolutely normal to feel sad and depressed. This is commonly known as ‘situational depression’.  Depression which arises due to some situation. But actual problem does not stop here, it just begins.

How Hollywood overcomes depression?

However when the depression symptoms continue for weeks or months then it turns severe and is known as clinical depression. But yes, it is as important to deal with mental illnesses as we need to take care of the physical aspects of our soul.

Is mental illness similar to treating stomach pain?

We are quick to respond to our stomach or rather too quickly, isn’t it? Feeling hungry? Order a large cheesy pizza. Feeling bloated, get your hands on a soft drink. Even our mind gives us subtle signs provided we listen to them carefully.

  • Hesitant about going out anymore
  • Not interested in working (office/college/school)
  • Withdrawal from family and close friends
  • Taking alcohol and or sedatives

  • finding it difficult to concentrate

  • Guilt

  • Poor confidence
  • Frustrated
  • Unhappy
  • Disappointed
  • Melancholy
  • Self-destructive
  • Hopelessness

Thoughts that work in this phase

  • 'I’m worthless'
  • It happens to me only'
  • I will not be able to achieve anything good in life'
  • 'I’m useless.'
  • 'Life’s is unfair to me'
  • ‘I failed my parents, partner or friends'

  • Sleep-related issues (either of the extremes)
  • Sick most of the time
  • Usual headaches
  • Changes in appetite
  • Sudden weight loss or weight gain

What you need to do next ?

Once you understand the symptoms it is important that you fix an appointment with your family doctor first. Let him or her know how you have been feeling and why. Let the family doctor suggest a good counsellor and a clinical psychologist instead of yourself searching the net and asking friends and acquaintances for the same. Your family doctor knows your family history and depression is a problem which at times runs in families. So the kind of medications and counselling you require will be best provided by your family doctor.

Popular celebrities also overcame depression and anxiety by first accepting the issue

Hollywood comedian Jim Carrey in an interview shocked the world by stating that he was actually battling depression off-screen when on-screen he was making others laugh! It is no wonder that Bollywood’s some of the most happy-go-lucky stars like Priyanka Chopra, Anushka Sharma and even Deepika Padukone have accepted that they were able to fight depression early only when they first accepted that they were feeling depressed.

It’s the hormones, not your mind

Depression is not always about mind or about the negative thought patterns or having a ‘negative personality’ as few friends might refer when they try to counsel us out of the situation. We at times overlook the connection between ‘feeling depressed’ and the hormones which lead to this situation.

Go for a thyroid test

If you find that most of the above-mentioned symptoms of depression stand true for you, then you must fix an appointment with your doctor and get your thyroid test done. Hormonal triggers and imbalances cannot be neglected when we talk about emotional disturbances in life. There are commonly two conditions in the thyroid. Either the thyroid becomes overactive –this condition is known as hyperthyroidism (the common symptoms are anxiety, panic attacks, sleep-related issues and obviously depression). On the other hand, an underactive thyroid is known as hypothyroidism the symptoms of which are again moodiness, loss of appetite, weight loss etc.

If you rush for a psychologist and he or she stars your counselling sessions without getting your thyroid tested then the antidepressants he might prescribe will not have any impact on checking your thyroid.

Age is also a great deciding factor

An emotional outburst like anxiety, panic attacks, insomnia, guilt etc. are quite normal during phases of hormonal flux like puberty, pre-pregnancy period and even during pregnancy and or menopause.

The real power lies within you

However trying the situation be, it ultimately depends on YOU react to it. In Tinsel town where celebs are tight-lipped about their personal and physical problems, actress Deepika Padukone accepted that she was suffering from depression and anxiety attacks, superstar Amitabh Bachchan in 2010 he opened up about his liver cirrhosis. He admitted that approximately 75 per cent of his liver was damaged due to Liver Cirrhosis. But at the same time, by opening his heart out he even made a very clear statement that India has best medical facilities and people can actually survive on 12 per cent of the liver with the proper lifestyle and dietary intake.

In one case it is about a mental condition while on the other hand in the second example it is the physical issue. But the way we look at things and deal with it decides how easily and quickly we come out of it.

Power of affirmations

Affirmations are a great tool in pulling us back to life. Affirmations are short sentences spoken in present tense like ‘I am healthy’, ‘I am smart’, ‘I am very good looking’, ‘I am capable enough’, ‘I have a lot of money in my bank account’, ‘and I am a very stable person’. These affirmations when spoken in present tense attract similar qualities from the universe and the entire universe directs those positive energies towards making that sentence a reality.

The universe is quite like a mirror. It gives us what we give to it. We can sue the power of affirmations to attract deep positive vibrations from the atmosphere.  These affirmations help us in breaking the deep-rooted negative thought patterns we created right from our childhood.
