Consumption of a sensible and well-balanced diet helps in achieving optimal health throughout life. For good health and well being one must eat a balanced diet. Nutrition plays an important role in the lifelong health and wellbeing of a person. When important nutrients are not consumed in appropriate quantities or not absorbed as per the needs of the body, undernutrition takes place.


The food provides the body with energy, essential fats, protein, minerals and vitamins to live, grow and function properly. Variety of foods is needed by our body to provide with the right amounts of nutrients for good health. One of the greatest cultural pleasures of life is an enjoyment of a healthy diet. 


To maintain a healthy weight, one must take good nutrition and do physical activities daily. Taking good nutrition helps us in many ways:-

-    Improves your health 
-    Improve your ability to fight off illness 
-    Increases your energy level
-    Improve your ability to recover from illness or injury
-    Reduces the risk of some diseases like heart disease, diabetes, stroke, some cancers and osteoporosis. 


By eating healthy foods means eating a variety of foods which gives nutrients needed for the body to maintain a good health, makes you feel good and have energy. The nutrients include fat, carbohydrates, proteins, water, vitamins, water and minerals. For the survival of human being, nutrition is an essential component for the body. Along with physical activity and maintaining a healthy weight, one must eat well to help the body to stay strong and healthy. 


The study of nutrients in food, how the body uses nutrients and the relationship between diet, health and disease is nutrition. When the body receives all the vitamins, nutrients and minerals it needs to work efficiently means the body is getting a well balanced good nutrition. The intake of meals and snacks should include nutrient-rich foods which are low in calories. 


One should eat well if you are suffering from breast cancer or undergoing treatment. Your immune system, mood and your energy level are greatly affected by whatever you eat. Food that is low in fibre and essential nutrients but high in salt, sugar and fat are not good at maintaining a healthy diet. On a regular basis if this food is taken then you may lose nutritional deficiencies, reduce immunity and delay growth and development in children. Intake of vitamin A, C and E and minerals like zinc and selenium can reduce immunity and lead to an increase the risk of infection and disease. Increased illness and lead to emotional and economic strain on families. 


Protein, calcium and vitamin D should be taken in sufficient quantity as is needed for the body or it will lead to impair dental and bone development and can also lead to long-term health issues. You may also suffer from poor digestive health due to lack of fibre. Overall health should be monitored properly or else can lead to digestive issues. 


People who do not consume enough iron-rich foods like dark green leafy vegetables, red meat, cereals fortified with iron and dried fruit are likely to suffer from iron deficiency. Lack of Vitamin C in the diet also causes low iron stores as Vitamin C aids the absorption of iron in the body. Development and growth can be highly impacted by low iron stores and anaemia. Lack of nutrition can lead to optimum brain development. These can have an effect on memory, learning skills, language skills and IQ scores. 


Poor families lack proper facilities for preparing food, store them and cook in a clean environment may find it difficult to maintain a healthy, balanced diet. There is some nutritious food that does not need any preparation and is easily portable. Various fruits like apples, bananas, oranges, etc. Unsalted nuts and seeds, lightly salted popcorn, small packets of milk do not need any preparations. Small portions of cheese, dried fruits, low sugar cereal bars do not need any cooking. 

 

There are various tips for eating well to maintain good health and derive the maximum nutrition. Some of them are – 

  • Eating plenty of fruits. Derive the natural fiber in fruits by eating fruits as a whole and not by making juices. 
  • Plenty of vegetables should be eaten. Try to include a variety of colour and types in your meal every day. 
  • Eating plenty of whole grain. While preparing your food include cereals, slices of bread and pasta from whole grains. 
  • Have plenty of low fat or fat-free milk. To keep your bones strong eat sufficient amount of calcium and vitamin D 
  • Lean meats and poultry which have less fat and fewer calories should be chosen as they are a good source of protein.
  • Replace your meats and poultry with fish., tofu and beans 

 

You may lose interest in eating and cooking along with age. You can make small changes which can overcome your eating in a nutritious way. Some of the ways are – 

  • Food not tasting good – Along with age, you may feel that the food does not taste good. In such case, try exploring new recipes or add various spices and herbs. Some people lose appetite due to the intake of medicines. In such a case, consult your doctor. 
  • Difficulty in chewing – Some people may face the problem of chewing food along with age. If you feel difficulty try to eat softer foods liked cooked vegetables, eggs, beans, canned fruits and applesauce. If the problem with your teeth or gums still persists, talk to your doctor or dentist. 
  • Having poor digestion - If you are having poor digestion, talk to your doctor to maintain a well-balanced diet and know the foods that can be avoided. You should always prefer to have a healthy diet by eating a variety of dishes, choose foods low in fat and sugar. Also, prefer to prepare food by adding less of salt content. You can combine your healthy diet, regular physical activity and improve your overall health. Try to prevent diseases like cancer, high blood pressure, heart disease and chronic kidney disease. Improve your health by building strength and endurance by coping up with stress and anxiety.
