Right from our pimpled adolescent years we are taught that oil is the enemy and we need to keep it in check with harsh astringents and scrubs and other oil-like products from our vanity and never ever look back. When facial oils became the skin-care trend, it went against everything which we knew and believed.

In a complete skin-care routine, top dermatologists and skin-care brands say that oil based products are not a passing trend. Oil is not the same as it used to be in the past. Advances in the ability to refine oil have led to cosmetic-grade oils and these are the consistency of water. Previously oil used to be thick and clogging like mineral oil but now they are very emollient and do not leave any residue on the skin.

Since the last few years we have seen the rise and rise of face oils and researches done from time to time also shows that these little bottles of liquid gold have many brilliant skin benefits. There are still many confusion surrounding oils. Many of us thought that oil was our skin’s number one enemy. It is time to think about it again and find out that oil can actually be our skin’s best friend.

Mentioned below are some of the myths from fact and get the truth about the popular face oils:-

Myth – Face Oils are a new skin care fad

Fact – Since centuries women have been using them to protect and soothe their skin.

For hundreds of years, facial oils have been a part of a tried and trusted skin care regime. Egyptians use to oil their skin with different blends of fragrant plant seed oils including peppermint, fenugreek and bitter almond. This used to keep the skin soft and beautiful. Ancient Japanese used precious, fragrant camellia oil to add gloss to their hair. Romans are well known to seek pleasure loved aromatic, oily massage with almond and castor seed oil. For centuries in India, the medicinal practice of Ayurveda has suggested the use of special Tailiams (oils) for beautifying and purifying skin.

Myth – If your skin is oily, then you should steer clear of face oils.

Fact – Plant oils contain fatty acids which can help rebalance oily skin and stop it from overproducing sebum.

If your skin is oily then it you will wish to have a screaky clean complexion but harsh detergents and over-avid scrubbing will actually strip your skin and send pores into overdrive.

You can rebalance oily skin by knowing the barrier function and calming sebum production and face oils will just help you to do so. Face oils are packed with nourishing fatty acids that protect our skin’s natural barrier which helps in holding on to hydration and protecting it from the elements. Ultimately you will get a calmer, clear skin that does not need to produce extra oil to moisturize itself.

All oils are not created equal like for cold pressed plant seed oils like rosehip which is packed with protective antioxidants and black cumin seed oil that has anti-microbial properties to ward off acne-causing bacteria.

Myth: For getting deep-down clean, foaming cleansers are still better than oils.

Fact: The toughest waterproof mascara can be removed by oil while still maintaining the skin’s natural barrier.

Oils turn the waxes that give waterproof makeup its staying power so that they can be removed easily from your skin. Since oils respect the skin’s natural lipid barrier, they will not leave your skin feeling tight or stripped like wash-off cleansers does.

In the palm of your hands, warm a few drops of cleansing oil and massage them into your dry skin taking the time to really work them in. With a soft wash cloth with warm water, wring it and press it on your face for a few minutes and allow its warmth to loosen and melt any stubborn debris. If you need, you can wring and refresh your cloth with more warm water. You will now get a glowing, soft and deep-down clean skin to be proud of.

Myth – Face oils are not as good as moisturizers at hydrating skin.

Truth – Oils easily penetrate your skin easily and hence help moisturizes skin more effectively than creams.

Face oils are lipophilic, means they are ‘fat loving’. Hence they pass through the lipid layer of our skin faster than moisturizers and they are blends of water and oil. Our skin absorbs it quickly and also plumps it out better.

Rosehip and camellia are natural plant seed oils that are packed with omega fatty acids 3, 6 and 9 which help to protect our skin’s barrier and prevent our skin from losing water. Hence for a long term, the skin stays plumper and juicer looking.

Double duty is performed by these precious oils when it comes to anti-ageing as well as hydrating the skin. They deliver potent antioxidants that protect the skin from free radical damage and calm the inflammation which can lead to premature wrinkles and hence helps in reducing the signs of ageing in the skin.

Myth: Face Oils are too rich and too thick to be used every day.

Fact: High quality plant oils have a natural affinity with our skin and hence can be used day and night.

Global skin expert, Dr. Terry Loong says, “Not only are they incredibly nourishing, ultra-lightweight and quick to absorb – but they also have the perfect texture to penetrate skin easily and deeply.”

Oil made with modern formulations are so pure and so ultra-fine, they feel more like a watery serum than the face oils of the olden days. These face oils are absorbed easily by the skin and are just perfect for every age and skin type whether drier or any complexions. Try to mix a drop or two of facial oil into your favorite moisturizer to give a smooth effect to your skin. Before going to relax in the bed, for two minutes you can massage a couple of drops into warm and freshly cleansed skin. In the morning you are sure to get a softer and plumper skin.

Myth:  Face oils will cause your makeup to streak and slip

Fact: Not True! Layer it well and face oil can be your biggest friend when it comes to getting an all-over glow.

Massaging with lightweight oil leaves your skin perfectly smooth and prime for a makeup. Before applying your favorite base, use just a small amount of oil and allow it to be absorbed for one or two minutes. Like a highlighter pat it on your cheek, brow and collarbones after makeup, to give your skin an amazing dewy glow without disturbing the rest of your makeup.
